West Jordan is just a hop and a skip from Utah’s main hub, Salt Lake City, but the neighborhood (and nearby neighborhoods) offer plenty of activities and family fun from sports to shopping to snacking on some of the best sweets this side of the Rockies. The best part? It won’t break the weekend budget.
1. Attend a play at the Hale Centre Theatre.
This theatre in the round is cleverly designed and elegantly executed. With a sweeping staircase welcoming guests to the cozy theater and an assortment of musicals for every taste throughout the year, this performing arts center is the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening out. The theater is organized similarly to a stadium and the stage itself is a living, constantly transforming platform for the actors as hydraulics lower, raise, separate, move, and angle the stage to each performance’s needs bringing even the most imaginative plays to life. Most recently Ghost: The Musical rocked the stage, but The Little Mermaid is on it’s way in this summer.
2. See a soccer match at the Rio Tinto Stadium.
Watch from one of the stadium’s 20,000 seats as Major League Soccer team Real Salt Lake plays teams from all around the country. Also popular: Rio Tinto’s extensive stadium concession food options to keep the fam nourished all game long.
3. Make a shopping stop at Gardner Village.
Antiques, boutiques, and one-of-a-kind furniture shops fill the historic buildings in this quaint, rustic little shopping area off of the Jordan river. Gardner Village is best in fall and winter; when the holiday decorations are in full swing.
4. Visit the aquarium.
The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is recently remodeled and offers a selection of fairly large exhibits to explore. From penguins to sharks, the aquarium’s animals will excite kids of all ages.
5. Satisfy your sweet tooth at Sweet’s Candy Factory.
Not only do visitors get to taste some of the addicting confections that Sweets Candy produces, but the factory also offers a by-appointment behind-the-scenes experience of the candy-making process. Must-try: chocolate-covered cinnamon bears.
6. Taste your way through Cafe Rio‘s fresh Mexican cuisine.
Chipotle, move aside. For a decent price, Cafe Rio offers the tastiest and freshest options for burritos, salads, tacos and tostadas. Portions are large, veggies are fresh, and the guacamole is always delicious. Crowd favorite: sweet pork wrapped in a homemade flour tortilla.
Bonus: (because it’s a bit of a drive)
7. Find Solitude
Solitude Mountain Resort is about an hour out of West Jordan and into the nearby mountains. In winter months, head to the Solitude Nordic Center for some family-friendly snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. During the warmer months, families can spend the day hiking, fishing or celebrating the annual Wildflower Festival.
